Snowpack Structure

The old snowpack is well consolidated and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. Above approximately 1200 m snow will fall until Sunday over a wide area. The new snow is bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. The southerly wind will transport the new snow significantly. Intermediate and high altitudes: Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes. In particular in the vicinity of peaks a little snow is lying.

Tendency

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of the snowfall.

Avalanche Activity

Gradual increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.

Above approximately 1300 m snow will fall from midday. The wind will be strong over a wide area. As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind from southerly directions, avalanche prone wind slabs will form in the afternoon in particular at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects and above approximately 1500 m medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large avalanches are to be expected as the snowfall becomes more intense. Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for great caution and restraint.
