Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and wet snow represent the main danger.

Up to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last few days above approximately 1800 m. Little snow fell yesterday. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes moderate wind from westerly directions, sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed by the early morning in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls as well as at high altitude. In particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation and on very steep slopes small and medium-sized avalanches are possible. They can in isolated cases be released, even by a single winter sport participant. As a consequence of solar radiation small and medium-sized moist and wet avalanches are possible below approximately 2600 m. This applies in particular in case of releases originating from steep sunny starting zones at intermediate altitudes that have retained the snow thus far. Even a small snow slide can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 15 to 20 cm of snow, and up to 30 cm in some localities, fell on Tuesday above approximately 1600 m. Regions of the south that are exposed to the foehn wind: 2 to 5 cm of snow, and up to 10 cm in some localities, fell on Thursday above approximately 1800 m. The new snow is poorly bonded with the old snowpack in some places below approximately 2200 m. Intermediate and high altitudes: The new snow is lying on a crust in particular on east to south to west facing aspects. The moderate wind has transported the new snow. Over a wide area there is still a very large amount of snow.

Tendency

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of the snowfall.
