Avalanche Activity

Slab avalanches are the main danger.

In particular on steep slopes medium-sized slab avalanches are possible as a consequence of new snow and strong wind. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases on steep shady slopes above approximately 2000 m. This applies in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. The wind slabs are clearly recognisable to the trained eye. As a consequence of falling temperatures, the natural activity of wet avalanches will decrease.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 15 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell yesterday above approximately 1700 m. The easterly wind has transported the fresh and old snow. The various wind slabs have bonded generally well with the old snowpack. The surface of the snowpack will soften later than the day before.
