Avalanche Activity

Fresh and older wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence.

10 to 20 cm of snow will fall until midday above approximately 1400 m. Soft wind slabs will form. The somewhat older wind slabs will be covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise. These can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack above approximately 2000 m. At elevated altitudes these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on steep west, north and east facing slopes. In very isolated cases avalanches can also be triggered in the old snowpack and reach large size.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow will fall until midday above approximately 1400 m. Soft wind slabs will form. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on steep west, north and east facing slopes.
