Tendency

The sleet will give rise as the day progresses to rapid moistening of the snowpack over a wide area. As a consequence of sharply rising temperatures and rain up to the high Alpine regions a precarious avalanche situation will develop on Sunday.

Avalanche Activity

Moist and wet avalanches are possible from the morning.

As a consequence of sharply rising temperatures and partly cloudy skies a very precarious avalanche situation will develop. As the penetration by moisture increases moist and wet avalanches are possible from the early morning, even large ones in isolated cases. This applies in particular at the base of rock walls, as well as in steep rocky terrain in particular above approximately 2300 m. The old wind slabs will become increasingly prone to triggering especially on near-ridge shady slopes above approximately 2500 m. These can be released in deep layers by a single winter sport participant.

Snowpack Structure

The surface of the snowpack will cool hardly at all during the overcast night and will already be soft in the early morning. The high temperatures as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack over a wide area also at intermediate and high altitudes. Over a wide area relatively hard layers of snow are lying on a weakly bonded old snowpack. Individual weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, in particular on shady slopes at intermediate and high altitudes.
