Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger.

In the last few days sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls as well as at intermediate and high altitudes. These are to be evaluated with care and prudence in particular on northwest to east to southeast facing aspects above approximately 2300 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in steep terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. The wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases. Avalanches can in isolated cases be triggered in the old snowpack and reach quite a large size. Below approximately 2200 m moist and wet avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

The wind has transported the new snow significantly. Fresh wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. The snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular on steep sunny slopes. Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes.
