Avalanche Activity

NC for 22/03: Fresh windslab on NE, E, SE and S aspects above 900m esp. gully tops, coire rims. Cornices building. Hazard Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: From overnight onwards, localised accumulations of unstable windslab will gradually develop on North-East through East to South aspects above 900 metres. Areas most affected will be where it gains depth, around coire rims, gully tops and other wind sheltered locations. Fragile cornices will also develop here. The old snowpack, which can also be generally found in the same areas, will refreeze and be firm and stable throughout. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight gale force South-Westerly winds will ease slightly and veer to become North-Westerly. The freezing level will remain above the summits initially before sharply lowering to 700 metres in the early hours where it will remain for the rest of the forecast period. Overnight snowfall is forecast, leaving a mainly dry day before snowfall continues in the late afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A dry day with only a small amount of drizzle over the highest summits in the morning. A mild day with a 2400 metre freezing level and strong South-Westerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: The remaining snow is well bonded, stable and continues to slowly thaw. Greatest amounts can be found on North through East to South-East aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
