Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

As a consequence of the rainfall up to approximately 2800 m the snow cover was moistened in the near-surface layers or, if the snowpack was thin, made thoroughly wet. The more deeply embedded layers inside the snow cover are encrusted up to approximately 2600 m. As a result of the strong to storm-strength winds, fresh snowdrift accumulations have been generated in the high alpine regions more than anywhere else which may still be prone to triggering in some places. At intermediate and high altitudes, the near-surface layers of snow are freezing and thereby stabilising as a result of the lower temperatures. Gliding avalanches continue to be possible. In the high alpine regions the stabilisation of the fresh fallen snow and the recently generated snowdrift accumulations is proceeding somewhat more slowly.

Weather Forecast

Weather forecast through Monday, 20.11.2023

On Sunday night, skies are expected to clear over widespread areas. On Monday during the daytime hours in the northern regions, skies will be variably cloudy accompanied by sunny intervals. During the course of the day, cloud cover is expected to increase. In the southern regions it will be predominantly sunny.

Temperature

Temperatures are expected to drop. At midday at 2000 m to between +4 °C in the Valais and in the southern regions; and to 0 °C in the remaining regions of Switzerland.

Wind

Winds will be blowing from westerly directions,

  • at strong to storm strength at heightened altitudes on the northern flank of the Alps and in general in the high alpine regions, slackening off somewhat during the afternoon hours;
  • blowing at moderate strength at elevated altitudes in the other regions of Switzerland.

Weather Review

Observed weather review Sunday, 19.11.2023

In the northern regions skies were heavily overcast accompanied by precipitation. South of the Main Alpine Ridge it was predominantly sunny.

Fresh snow

The snowfall level ascended from below 2000 m on Saturday evening to 2200 m and as far up as approximately 2800 m on Sunday. In the eastern regions, above 2600 m and as far up as 3000 m in the western regions, there was snowfall:

  • northern Alpine Ridge: 20 to 40 cm;
  • from the Silvretta into the Samnaun: 10 to 20 cm;
  • southern part of the Valais, remaining parts of northern Grisons and the Lower Engadine: 5 to 10 cm;
  • in the remaining regions of Switzerland, less; on the southern flank of the Alps it generally remained dry.

Temperature

At midday, between +6 °C in the Lower Valais and on the southern flank of the Alps, and +4 °C in the remaining regions of Switzerland.

Wind

Winds were blowing from westerly directions,

  • predominantly at strong velocity, intermittently at storm-strength, on the northern Alpine Ridge and in the Valais at elevated altitudes;
  • blowing predominantly at moderate to strong velocity in the Ticino and the remaining parts of Grisons.

Tendency

Outlook through Wednesday, 22.11.2023

In the northern regions, skies on Tuesday will be heavily overcast for the most part, and precipitation is anticipated which will persist into the daytime hours on Wednesday. On Wednesday afternoon it is expected to remain dry and, in the inneralpine regions, partly sunny. By Wednesday afternoon, 20 to 30 cm of fresh fallen snow is anticipated over widespread areas on the northern flank of the Alps, significantly less snowfall in the inneralpine regions. The snowfall level will lie at approximately 1000 m. Avalanche danger levels are expected to increase at elevated altitudes on the northern flank of the Alps more than anywhere else. On the southern flank of the Alps it will be predominantly sunny. Avalanche danger is not expected to change significantly.
