You can trigger an avalanche where recently drifted snow forms dense and cohesive slabs on northerly and easterly-facing slopes. Avoid bulbous or hollow-sounding pillows of snow directly below ridgelines and convex rollovers and inside of gully features. Freshly built cornices are a sign that the slope below is wind-loaded. Recent avalanche activity and cracking within the new snow are clues to move to wind-sheltered low-angle slopes for safer travel.
