Kernpunkte

At the upper elevations deep instability may persist in some upper elevation active avalanche paths. In addition, strong winds and todays snowfall will be forming pockets of wind slab on leeward aspects and in cliff areas. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8,000 feet.

In isolated areas at the higher elevations, layers of faceted snow persist in the lower portion of the snowpack in steep, avalanche-prone slopes that face north through east to south. In those areas some potential may remain for snowmobilers to trigger deep hard slab avalanches up to three feet in depth.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A high pressure ridge over Eastern Idaho will move east during the evening hours. West winds will increase overnight. Areas of light snowfall will develop by morning and increase in intensity during the day. Three to six inches of new snow are possible in favored locations by tomorrow evening. This snowfall will be accompanied by west winds with average speeds of 25 to 30 and gusts to 45 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the 20s in the mountains and in the upper 20s and 30s in the valleys. In the Teton area the general avalanche is expected to be LOW in the morning and be on the increase at the higher elevations during the day. Isolated areas of MODERATE hazard associated with buried, persistent weak layers exist in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas.
