Kernpunkte

Periods of moderate to heavy snowfall will combine with strong southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds to create new wind slabs at the mid and upper elevations. As the day progresses, these slabs will gain volume and depth. Skiers and riders could trigger these slabs in steep, wind-loaded terrain. Monitor weather conditions and avoid slopes with obvious signs of recent wind loading.

    New wind slabs are forming on slick sun crusts and wind pack. Backcountry travelers venturing into steep, wind-loaded terrain above 7,500 feet could trigger these slabs to depths of three to six inches this morning. Continued snowfall and strong southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will increase the size and likelihood of triggering these slides as the day progresses. Natural avalanche activity could become possible by this afternoon if snowfall continues throughout the day. These slabs could have depths up to 18 inches by this afternoon.

Avalanche Discussion

A winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect until 5 PM Monday evening. Periods of moderate to heavy snowfall are likely as moisture continues to stream into the region from the northwest. This snowfall will be accompanied by strong westerly winds with average speeds of 30 to 40 and gusts to 50 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s and 30s in the mountains. Rain may mix with snow in the valleys during the afternoon hours. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE and could increase to CONSIDERABLE if high intensity snowfall occurs for a significant duration. New winds slabs are likely to be sensitive to human triggers as they gain depth and volume and could release naturally if snowfall forecast verify.
