Avalanche Summary

The most likely place to trigger an avalanche is where strong winds have drifted new snow into cohesive slabs. You can find deeper drifts in cross-loaded terrain features and below ridgelines on lee slopes. Drifted snow looks smooth, has a wave-like appearance, or feels firm.

Cracking in the new snow or avalanches on similar slopes are signs of instability and an indication to move to lower angle terrain sheltered from the wind.
