Kernpunkte

At the high elevations skiers and riders have the potential to trigger surface slabs that lie upon weak layers of faceted snow with depths to two feet in steep avalanche terrain. At the mid elevations, isolated pockets of small slabs could be triggered in very steep rocky areas and avalanches are not expected at the low elevations today.

Weak faceted snow persists in the snowpack. Depending on location, these faceted snow layers can vary in thickness from thin layers of surface hoar to areas where the entire early season snowpack can be faceted. At the high elevations, where consolidated snow rests on these layers avalanches can be triggered by backcountry enthusiasts in steep avalanche terrain. These slabs could be small in size or could have depths to two feet.
