Avalanche Activity

GC for 22/12 Poorly bonded windslab developing on mainly NE,E,SE,S aspects above 850m.Fragile cornices on same aspects.Haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised area of moderately bonded windslab will gradually build through the period mainly on North-East through East to South aspects. Mostly forming in wind sheltered locations above 950m with coire rims, and gully tops most affected. Cornices will also form here. Some isolated accumulations of windslab may affect other sheltered aspects particularly sheltered gullies. Elsewhere, snow cover will be shallow often on bare ground. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level lowering to around 500 metres. Snow showers throughout the period, heaviest overnight and in the early hours but continuing through the day. Strong to gale force Westerly winds will persist becoming North-Westerly by the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight and early this morning the freezing level climbed to around 1500 metres with some heavy rain showers, quite a turbulent period. The strong West-South-Westerly winds continued through the day with the freezing level lowering to around 900 metres. Lighter precipitation fell with some light snow over the higher summits. ObservedSnowStability: Last night the snowpack became moist and depleted further. Light accumulations of new snow fell today mainly above 950 metres, these are not extensive, generally shallow and stable. Greatest snow amounts are in the high sheltered corries. The avalanche hazard is Low.
