Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and wet snow represent the main danger. The avalanche danger will increase during the day.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind, wind slabs formed in the last few days in high Alpine regions. These can be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation moist snow slides and avalanches are possible as the day progresses. Medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large natural avalanches are possible in particular on steep sunny slopes. Low altitudes: On very steep grassy slopes these can slide on the ground. Off-piste activities call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

Snowpack Structure

30 to 50 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last three days above approximately 2000 m. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be quite good over a wide area. The spring-like weather conditions will give rise to increasing settling of the snowpack in particular at low and intermediate altitudes. Above approximately 2000 m there is still a very large amount of snow. In the last few days numerous small and medium-sized avalanches were reported.
