Avalanche danger remains elevated from recent storm activity. Near and above treeline wind-blown snow exists. North and east aspects hold the highest risk of triggering an avalanche. Observe for blowing snow and lens-shaped surfaces to identify wind loaded terrain, and carefully evaluate slopes steeper than 30 degrees. A conservative mindset and travel behavior will increase your safety margins to this problem.

    Recent snowfall is available for transport. Today, winds will blow from the west and northwest near and above treeline. Watch for blowing snow and newly forming drifts on leeward aspects. With that in mind, existing drifts on NW, N, NE, and E aspects remain most consequential. These slabs range from shallow to deep, dependent on elevation and terrain. If triggered, results would be destructive enough to bury a person or cause damage to timber. Reduce your risk by avoiding leeward slopes steeper than 30 degrees near and above treeline with actively loading snow, large cornices, or previous signs of wind effect. Use snowpack assessment to identify areas of concern, and conservative terrain management to limit exposure. Features that encourage drifting include ridgelines, rock outcroppings, and steep convex terrain. 

Avalanche Discussion

Limited information has been gathered above treeline, and uncertainty remains regarding the state of the snowpack. Less active weather with warm temperatures should aid in the settlement of the snowpack and a general stability trend over the coming days.  

Yesterday, forecasters explored a new backcountry zone, resulting in excellent terrain selection to all aspects near and below treeline. Snow conditions were fantastic, with a respectable 47-inch snowpack at 5,300 feet. Read more HERE.
