The avalanche danger will be highest in the morning and decrease throughout the day. You could trigger an avalanche above 8,000 feet on wind loaded slopes. Travel carefully in areas with pockets of pillowy snow, often found near ridgelines, gullies, and in concavities.

    Several days of precipitation and strong wind have formed wind slabs near and above the treeline. Above the treeline is where you'll find the biggest and most sensitive wind slabs. The primary aspects where you might encounter this issue today are northeast, east, southeast, south, and southwest. Though in isolated areas, especially in extreme terrain, you could find a wind slab on other aspects.

    Wind slabs have formed over a weak layer 30+ centimeters down from the surface that sits above a melt-freeze crust. This weak layer of decomposing fragments is drier and less dense than the wind-packed snow that rests above it. On steep terrain above 8,000 feet, the weight of a rider on this snowpack structure could trigger an avalanche. 

    Identify areas where wind slabs live by looking for accumulations of blowing snow, cornice formation, and wind pillows. Avoid traveling on or beneath steep slopes with these characteristics and give cornices a wide berth.

Avalanche Discussion

Today, the highest risk of triggering an avalanche will be in the morning. As the day goes on, the risk will decrease. So far, the snowpack seems to be handling the recent loading well. The fair weather today and tomorrow will help continue the healing process. With that being said, backcountry travelers should still be cautious on wind loaded, steep slopes.

Popular zones to be wary of today include, but are not limited to, Sun Bowl, Powder Bowl, Casaval Ridge into Avalanche Gulch, and the east side of Green Butte in the Old Ski Bowl. Yesterday, the power and significance of the wind were clear to forecasters and public observers on the Southside of Mount Shasta.
