The likelihood of wind slab avalanches will rise throughout the day with increasing wind and renewed snowfall. Blowing snow and growing cornices will point to the most suspect terrain. Avoid triggering avalanches below ridgelines and cross-loaded gullies by sticking to sheltered terrain with low slope angles.

    Large wind slabs that formed mid-week may be stubborn to the weight of a person or snow machine. They could still fail, especially from the edges where the slab is thinner. Watch for blowing snow across ridgelines as the first sign that fresh, sensitive slabs are building on the leeward sides of ridgelines, the sidewalls of gullies, and cross-loaded depressions. Seek lower slope angles or sheltered terrain to avoid the problem.

Avalanche Discussion

Active winter weather returns by this afternoon. Winds increased overnight and will continue to strengthen throughout the day. There is soft surface snow available for transport. New snow begins to fall by midday. Expect fresh wind slabs to become more sensitive and larger into the evening and overnight.

The upper snowpack has been settling and strengthening. Wind-affected snow is common in exposed areas and above treeline. In sheltered terrain near treeline, soft surface snow gradually stiffens as you get deeper into the snowpack. Warm temperatures and greenhousing yesterday likely left crusts at lower elevations. 

Persistent weak layers are buried deeply under hard slabs and rain crusts at the bottom of the snowpack. They have been tested by over 70 inches of new snow and almost 10 inches of water equivalent this week. Avalanches failing on old snow are very unlikely for now. A large trigger such as a breaking cornice or a wind slab avalanche may be required to initiate a failure in faceted snow near the ground. Intense and prolonged new loading could bring the problem back to the forefront.
