Kernpunkte

Triggering large avalanches is unlikely. Small, wet loose snow avalanches may occur on steep, south-facing slopes as the day warms, particularly in the afternoon under rocks or cliffs. Isolated pockets of small wind slabs may be lingering on upper-elevation slopes, particularly on terrain facing N-NE-E. Continue to practice safe travel habits in the backcountry. 

Avalanche Discussion

From January 1st to 7th, the mountains received 3-4 feet of snow (5" SWE). Peak avalanche activity occurred ten days ago, during our last storm cycle. Since the 7th, the current snowpack has settled (~ 10" since January 6th) and has become quite stable. Our January high pressure has dug its heels in over the western US. We are on day 8 of this high-pressure spell, with another 5-7 days to go. Winds increased last weekend over the higher terrain, dramatically altering the snow surfaces above 7,000 feet. The wind, sun, and warm temperatures have nearly eliminated any snow available for transport, thus eliminating the chance for fresh wind slabs to form.

As people start stepping out into bigger terrain, there are a few potential concerns to keep in mind. They're not widespread or likely to produce a large avalanche, but they could be dangerous in higher-consequence terrain.

  • Wind Slabs: For the most part, they have aged, are stable, and the snow available for transport has dwindled over the last week. You may not find sensitive wind slabs at upper elevations, but think about the consequences and stay alert. Even small slabs can pose a threat if encountered unexpectedly. Pay close attention to signs of surface wind texture, like waves or ripples—or snow that feels thicker, denser, or more cohesive than what you're finding on wind-sheltered slopes.
  • Loose Snow Avalanches: can also occur on steep, solar slopes as the day warms, particularly underneath rocks and cliffs. You can reduce your exposure by switching to cooler, shaded aspects away from direct sun.
  • Cornices: It's the time of the season when cornices have grown large enough to produce a hazard on their own. With recent warm temperatures at upper elevations, overhanging cornices can break off naturally or from the weight of a person. These large chunks of snow can break in unexpected ways and typically break much farther back than expected.
