The snowpack is mostly stable. Increasing clouds should keep wet slides unlikely, but watch for wet snow surfaces and rollerballs on steep sunny slopes if skies remain sunny. Move to shadier slopes if you find slushy snow surfaces and see rollerballs.

    Loose snow avalanches are unlikely today. Snow surfaces are frozen this morning, but will soften some throughout the day. This problem will depend on the amount of sunlight today. Scattered clouds this morning and increasing clouds this afternoon should minimize the possibility of avalanche activity. Increasing wind will also help to keep surfaces cooler. If we get more sun than forecast and you see wet snow surfaces and rollerballs starting from your skis, choose shadier and lower angle slopes.

    Wet loose snow avalanches can entrain large amounts of snow. Assess snow surfaces carefully around large gullies and other terrain traps.

Avalanche Discussion

Today will be the last day of warm, dry weather before we head into a major weather pattern change. High pressure is breaking down which will open the door to more zonal flow, bringing cooler temperatures and moisture. It will also be the last day to observe current snow surfaces. Take note of where you see cold, near surface facets as well as surface hoar. This information will be useful to help understand where future avalanche problems will be. 

Keep an eye on the sky today. If sunshine persists and you notice crusts starting to break down, consider shadier terrain. If you find yourself in slushy snow and see rollerballs, watch for overhead hazard on steep sunny slopes around rocky outcrops. Move to colder, lower angle slopes. 

Current snow surfaces and coverage might be the biggest hazard today. Expect hard frozen surfaces this morning and exposed logs and rocks at lower elevations. It shouldn’t be a problem to be back in time for the Bad Bunny halftime show.
