Above freezing temperatures over the last 48 hours with possible rain today will cause wet snow avalanches across all aspects on steep terrain once the snow becomes wet and unstable. Monitor snow surfaces and choose lower angle slopes when you encounter unsupportable and mushy snow.  Be aware that larger wet slab avalanches are possible on very steep slopes over 35° in complex rocky terrain.

    Temperatures remained above freezing for the second consecutive night. Natural and human triggered wet snow avalanches, primarily wet loose, will be possible on steep terrain across all aspects and elevations. Mixed precipitation and rain today up to ~8500 feet will further destabilize snow. Although less likely, wet slab avalanches could occur as free flowing water moves through the snowpack failing on hardness changes 1-3 feet deep. Limit exposure below large sustained slopes or avalanche paths as these avalanches are difficult to predict. Avalanches will be more likely on terrain surrounded by rocks where the sun has heated surrounding snow surfaces.  Pay attention to the snow destabilizing if you sink deep into wet snow or if you encounter roller balls and pinwheels.

    Cornices: Large cornice falls are possible with the warmest temperatures all season. Avoid exposure below cornices and give them a wide margin of safety on ridgelines where they can break further back than expected.

Deep Slab to Wet Slab

We have shifted the deep persistent slab problem to a wet slab problem as the snowpack transitions from dry to wet. The last persistent slab avalanche occurred over a month ago. The snowpack structure remains poor and for this reason wet slab avalanches can’t be ruled out as water percolates through the snowpack where it could fail on previously formed weak layers and hardness changes. The good news is that once temperatures cool off, the snowpack will freeze and become more cohesive and stable as a result. Until then, wet slab avalanches are difficult to predict. For this reason, it’s better to play it safe when dealing with uncertainty and stick to less consequential terrain. 

Human Factor 2.0 Backcountry Recreation Survey

For years, the avalanche community has worked to understand and address the human factors that influence decision-making in the backcountry. The project's first stage involves interviewing backcountry recreationalists who have been traveling in avalanche terrain for at least one season.
