Triggering a 1 - 2 foot thick wind slab avalanche is possible on very steep slopes (>35°) at upper elevations. Look for drifted snow or shooting cracks around very steep wind-loaded features like cliffs and couloirs. Watch for natural shedding on steep, sunny slopes as the day warms.

    It is possible to trigger soft slabs 1 - 2 feet thick that formed from the past week's new snow and wind. This problem exists in isolated wind-loaded terrain at the upper elevations, primarily on north and east-facing terrain. These slabs are sitting on crusts that continue to show easy, planar hand shears within the recent snow. Over the past few days, multiple large wind slabs have been triggered in the neighboring Teton zone, where the same problem exists. Most avalanches involving the newest snow will be small but could still catch someone off guard in consequential terrain or run long distances on the underlying crust bed surface. It doesn’t take much moving snow to knock us off our feet or sled and send us somewhere we don’t want to be. Be on the lookout for signs of wind loading and isolated pockets of unstable snow along upper elevation ridgelines, below cliffs, and in couloirs.

    Skier triggered avalanche two days ago on a wind-loaded slope that caught and carried two people in the Tetons. A similar problem exists in the Snake River Range at upper elevations on very steep wind-loaded slopes.

    Small, wet loose avalanches are possible on very steep slopes that receive direct sunlight. Watch for recent snow to destabilize quicker around rock features that heat up surrounding snow surfaces. Wet loose avalanches can start small and entrain large amounts of snow on larger, sustained slopes. Pay attention to recent snow becoming denser and wetter as the day progresses and monitor cloud cover.

Avalanche Discussion

Conditions are becoming more stable, but wind slabs could still exist in steep isolated terrain features. These slabs are becoming less reactive but are still possible to trigger. Shooting cracks and stiffened surfaces are clear signs of wind-loaded snow. Be more wary of wind slabs if you travel into more complex terrain. Lingering wind slabs will be more likely in alpine terrain exposed to the wind. 

On Tuesday in the Tetons, two skiers were caught, carried, and partially buried in a large avalanche in steep, wind-loaded terrain. Thankfully, there were only minor injuries. This avalanche illustrates the nature of a large wind slab in isolated, steep, upper-elevation wind-loaded terrain. Similar conditions exist in the Snake River Range, and it serves as a reminder that any avalanche can be dangerous above or in consequential terrain. Don’t let your guard down in this type of terrain.

Continue to give cornices plenty of room, and remember that they break much further back towards the ridge than you might expect.
