Active winter weather should keep you on your toes today. Any potential avalanches will lie within new snow on top of a strong snowpack. We should see upwards of a foot of fresh powder paired with strong SW wind over the next 24 hours. Expect whiteout conditions near and above treeline. Watch out for signs of unstable snow like recent avalanches, blowing snow and cracking snow. Move to lower angle terrain if there is any doubt about the snow stability.

    Keep wind slabs on the mind. It's a simple recipe: new snow and wind. Yesterday, strong wind was observed moving snow off Green Butte Ridge and loading into Sun Bowl and Powder Bowl on Mt. Shasta. The NW-W-SW wind  has and will load SE-E-NE facing slopes and cross-load some north and south facing slopes.Blowing snow, cornices above a slope, drifted snow, and wind-created surface textures all indicate the presence of wind slabs.  Careful and conservative route plans that give wind slabs a wide berth can help avoid getting caught in a wind slab avalanche. This planning will also steer your group into more sheltered terrain where less wind-affected snow will likely exist.

    Approximately a foot of new snow is in the forecast for the next 24 hours. This avalanche problem won't be an issue until new snow totals exceed ~6 inches.  Look for areas of a cohesive slab near and below treeline later today, or for the dawn patrollers, early tomorrow morning. Keep your antenna up for signs of instability, like recent avalanches or shooting cracks/collapses in the snow. Digging into the snow to feel for different layers of storm snow and whether they break apart from each other easily can also help identify weaknesses. If any signs of instability or uncertainty about a slope exist, move to terrain less steep than 30° to enjoy the snow.
