High rainlines and saturated surface snow is making for interesting travel. New colder snow inbound today, combined with strong sustained winds will add to the already wind-condensed snowpack.  White out conditions will make navigating difficult, once the snow and wind starts this morning. Choose simpler terrain and keep margins wide.

    Blowing snow/rain and wind transport will be an issue today at all elevations and vary in severity and direction, though mainly South/South West over ridges and will be blowing throughout the day today up to 100 mph.  Wind loaded pockets and leeward catchments in steep shaded terrain,  could still be triggered to avalanche.  Exposed wind swept slopes will have varying snow depths and isolated pockets of hazard.   Travel cautiously, widen your safety margins and avoid steeper terrain.

    A combination of strong S/SW winds and warmer than average temperatures, with high rain lines around the 9000' and wet/ wind hammered snow this week has made for a very condensed snow pack. Rain runnels on all aspects of elevations up to 9k' is evidence of this.  Isolated pockets of snow that are wind loaded in leeward-steep terrain catchments zones, below ridge lines and gullies at upper elevations are still 'possibly triggered by humans.'

    Lower elevation zones are lacking snow pack in most/all aspects.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Snowmobile touring yesterday in the BWRA revealed wet and saturated surface snow about 2 inches thick, but underneath the wet surface was about 2 feet of cold-condensed wind effected snow. Underneath that sits, the old/new snow interface and that currently is about a 5 inch layer of old faceted grains that have begun to round and sinter.  This sintering or bonding is a sign the snowpack is strengthening.  This time of year with low sun angles and short days, it can take some time to bond and heal completely. Next weeks high pressure and warmer spring like conditions should help further in this process.  Be aware that shaded slopes in mid and higher elevations, isolated-stubborn pockets of wind slab condensed snow remains possible to trigger. 
  • We did pull the Persistent Slab off the Fx this past week because of that layer has become dormant and unreactive in both natural and human triggers widespread across our Fx area. With all that information, the multiple test slopes I tested with the track of the sled, I didn't see any signs of instability from any old or new snow instability, but that doesn't mean it is not possible in the right spot. 
  • I did see small pockets of old-wind slab that released in rocky-steep isolated terrain. Multiple crowns about 1 foot deep on new snow were visible throughout, on leeward North facing slopes. None of these were larger than D1 in size but were in steep consequential terrain, and could certainly push you into rocks and cliffs and terrain less indicative of a good time.  These are left over from the past round of snow, earlier this week.
