Mount Shasta

Light wind, warm weather and settlement of existing snow will keep danger low today. Natural and human triggered avalanches are unlikely. Winds could be elevated above treeline, look for signs of wind-blown snow in leeward terrain features. Smooth, icy snow surfaces are widespread at upper elevations. Self-arrest on this type of snow surface is difficult. Carry an ice axe, crampons and helmet and know how to use them.

• As always, travel with a plan that provides appropriate safety margins and maintains awareness of the conditions and terrain. Continue using group travel techniques that minimize risks, like only exposing one person at a time to avalanche terrain and regrouping in safe zones out of avalanche terrain and runout zones. Ensure that all group members are carrying and properly using companion rescue equipment (transceiver, shovel and probe).
• It's a holiday weekend with nice weather and we're expecting perhaps a few climbers. We can't stress the slip, fall and slide for life danger enough. We're feeling some message fatigue here, but the goal is for you to be fully aware. When conditions are as such, the consequences of a slip and fall have been witnessed first hand. It's not bright, and for some, it's lights out.
