You can trigger large cornices and avalanches where recent wind drifted snow at upper elevations.  Use caution on steep, wind-loaded slopes near ridges and cornices. On very steep, wind-sheltered slopes, you can trigger loose avalanches.

    Large cornices loom on ridges and steep, rock features. Use caution on leeward and wind-loaded slopes on or near ridges. Give cornices a large berth as they can break further back than expected. Stay out from under any cornices that could loom overhead. Make sure that your group stops and regroups in areas free of overhead hazards. On Saturday, warming temperatures and filtered sun could make cornices even more prone to falling.

    You may still be able to trigger wind slab avalanches at upper elevations. North and northeasterly winds formed the most recent slabs on Thursday. Earlier in the week, southwest winds also transported snow.

    You can trigger dry loose avalanches on very steep slopes and in wind-sheltered terrain.  They may run naturally on steep, sun-exposed slopes in the first half of the day. If you see fast-running point releases, use caution near terrain traps like rocks, gullies, and cliffs.  These avalanches could be dangerous in consequential terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect some relief from the recent cold temperatures. On Friday, observers triggered a nearby large cornice fall after they felt a collapse while standing on a ridge near Tower Mountain. On Thursday, observers triggered a small wind slab avalanche in the Swamp Creek drainage at 7,500ft, northeast aspect. 

Following a storm at the beginning of the week, observers report 1.5-2 feet of snow above the Feb 12th crust near and above treeline near Washington Pass. On some wind-affected slopes, the wind has scoured off all recent snow and the crust is on the surface. It's present up to at least 7000ft and is shallower at lower elevations and further east. 

Other avalanches occurred earlier in the week with the blustery storm. Observers near Harts Pass reported a large (size D2) avalanche that likely occurred on Tuesday due to a natural cornice fall on N, 7,100ft. On Monday, a large natural slab avalanche released below Blue Lake.  Blowing snow was observed near and above treeline and fresh cornices were growing along ridgelines.  Prior to this week's storm, The last significant avalanche cycle occurred on Feb 7th.
