Expect increasing avalanche hazard throughout the day today as strong winds and fresh snow impact the region.  Monitor snow accumulations closely and be ready to adjust your plans as todays storm intensifies. When in doubt, choosing travel routes with lower slope angles in sheltered terrain will limit your exposure.

    Strong winds and fresh snow will work together today to form unstable slabs near and above treeline.  Snowfall rates are expected to intensify by mid-morning and continue through the evening. This means that the size and distribution of unstable slabs will increase throughout the day. Blowing snow, recent drifting, hollow drum-like snow surfaces, and shooting cracks in surface snow are all signs that indicate nearby wind deposits. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Sheltered terrain with lower slope angles will offer safer riding opportunities.

New snow and winds are driving today's elevated hazard. Snow accumulations will be higher in areas near and north of Mammoth and at higher elevations along the Sierra crest. Conduct your own localized assessments and track new snow totals closely. As snow accumulates, storm instabilities (both slabs and sluffs) will become more likely on steep slopes in areas protected from the winds. No matter where you wish to travel, you can expect the avalanche hazard to rise throughout the day and as you move up in elevation and closer to the crest.

Variable and challenging surface conditions should also be at the forefront of backcountry enthusiasts' minds. Loose-faceted snow has been observed on north aspects above 10,000’, which may add some sensitivity to fresh slabs today. Hard and slick surfaces and stiff crusts may make travel difficult throughout the forecast area. Tools like boots and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be necessary depending on where you wish to travel.
