Kernpunkte

Human triggered avalanches up to 4' deep on buried weak layers remain possible today. Avalanche danger is on the scary side of moderate due to the potential for triggering very large avalanches.  After the huge storm this past weekend the snowpack needs time to gain strength. We recommend sticking to low angle terrain to avoid the potential of triggering an avalanche on a buried weak layer.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Chugach National Forest Motorised Use:  Turnagain Pass and Snug Harbor are the only areas in the Chugach National Forest that received enough snow to open, all other areas remain closed. Low snow cover hazards exist at low elevations, such as open creeks and alders. Seattle Ridge uptrack has been reported to have icy conditions near the top. We have limited information for these zones and recommend extra caution if riding on steeper slopes.

Avalanche Closure Notification: There will be intermittent traffic delays Thursday January 16, 2025 on the Seward Highway for Avalanche Hazard Reduction work. From milepost 20-23 on the Seward Highway, North of Seward, and South of Crown Point. Motorist should expect delays of up to 30 minutes between 09:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Updates will be posted on the 511 system. http://511.alaska.gov

    Patience is the key to managing deep persistent avalanche problems. While the likelihood of triggering an avalanche on a deeply buried weak layer has been decreasing since the end of the storm on Monday, there is still the potential for a person to trigger a very large avalanche from a thin spot in the snowpack. These low probability but high consequence avalanche problems are the most difficult to manage because they often provide little feedback but remain dangerous longer than expected. 

    The only way to avoid the potential to trigger an avalanche on a buried weak layer is to stick to low angle terrain. The extent of the avalanche activity in the Summit Lake area after the storm this week indicates that weak layers are widespread at mid and upper elevations. We urge a cautious approach to decision-making in Summit Lake while we give the snowpack time to gain strength.

    The winds have died down today, but lingering wind slabs up to 1' deep at upper elevations are still possible for a person to trigger. To identify slopes with wind slabs look for hollow feeling pillows of snow and shooting cracks. You can use small test slopes to check whether wind loaded slopes are still possible for a person to trigger.
