Kernpunkte

Avalanches will remain unlikely on Wednesday.  The sun and warm temperatures have been melting snow on sunny slopes, but any instabilities are likely to be very shallow.  It is always wise to carry avalanche rescue gear and use safe travel techniques.

    Wet Loose avalanches large enough to bury or injure a rider remain unlikely on Wednesday.  Nonetheless, because overnight low temperatures will not dip much below freezing, and because high temperatures could reach the mid-forties, this avalanche problem is worth having on your radar if you are heading to steep, sunny slopes.  Pay attention to how much melting is occurring.  Likely it'll just be enough for pleasant travel, but if you find yourself pushing more wet snow around than you expected, be mindful of terrain traps that could hurt you if you are knocked off your feet.

Avalanche Discussion

Warm temperatures on Tuesday and clear skies melted sunny slopes enough to provide for pleasant riding.  I'm not aware of, nor did I observe, any Wet Loose avalanche activity on Tuesday.  Riders may observe very small Wet Loose instabilities from the steepest South slopes below rocks and cliffs.

We had multiple observers out riding and particularly digging today.  Key takeaways are:

1)  They aren't finding "hard over weak" layers that would contribute to current avalanche problems.

2) Slopes that are protected from the sun and wind do have surface facets (weak sugary snow) that could prove to be a weak layer beneath next weekend's storm snow.

3) On cold protected slopes, there are some poorly developed facets associated with crusts that are buried 20 cm or so.  These layers are worth remembering with heavy snowfall in the forecast.
