Below freezing temperatures at night have helped to lock up a previously saturated snowpack and form a widespread supportable crust. New snow that began over the weekend has bonded well to the new crust, but winds out of the Southwest will increase throughout the day and will create the possibility for small wind slabs in isolated areas at upper elevations. Pay close attention to changing conditions within the new snow.

    New snow and moderate winds will create the recipe for small wind slabs to form in the upper elevations where temperatures have been more conducive for snow that can be transported. Winds return to a more typical pattern today- blowing from the West/Southwest. The most likely area to encounter this hazard will be below leeward ridgelines and steep cross loaded terrain features. Though it is unlikely to encounter this problem, it is not impossible. Be aware of loaded and textured slopes, and changes to snow density. 

Avalanche Discussion

Below freezing temperatures at night have formed a supportable melt freeze crust at all elevations, which is overall helping the snowpack to gain stability. Because of this, our avalanche hazards will exist primarily in the new snow. The snow that fell over the weekend has bonded well to the melt freeze crust, but increased winds throughout the day will create the potential for wind slabs to form. Off of wind affected terrain, differences in temperature, aspect and elevation will all play a role in how the new snow changes. Lower elevations that will see above freezing temperatures will be prone to small wet loose activity. Tree bombs and pinwheels are your early indicators that warmer temperatures are beginning to loosen the surface snow.

With the variability in conditions at different elevations, it's a good time to be aware of how changes in the weather are affecting the new snow. As we move into more of a true spring diurnal cycle where temperatures freeze at night and melt during the day, getting out the door early and planning on moving out of the mountains by the time things heat up in the afternoon will be especially critical in managing avalanche hazards. 

Different avalanche problems and quality of snow vary quite a bit with changes in elevation. Below 5,000' is sparse in snow coverage, and non-snow hazards such as rocks, downed trees and flowing creeks are starting to become a potential threat. As you gain elevation, the coverage and snow depth increase drastically at 6,000' and above.
