  While touring on Saturday I found wind slabs below ridgelines. These were all small in size (D1); however, I was surprised how easy it was to trigger them. I found shooting cracks and some crowns up to 10” deep. With moderate winds and new snow, we will continue to see wind slabs building throughout the day. I expect most slabs to be on the smaller side, but isolated features that collect snow and areas with a large fetch zone may produce large avalanches. 

  For Sunday we can expect to find wind slabs on leeward slopes near and above treeline. Wind slabs often form below ridgelines and areas that catch snow. Your best bet is to monitor the snow depth and look for the old firm snow surface to gauge the snow depth. While traveling, look for clues such as blowing snow, wind textured surfaces and pillow-like features. Also, be on the lookout for cracking in the snow and recent avalanches. If you find these signs, stick to slopes under 30 degrees.

  Remember that even a small avalanche that knocks you off your feet could have high consequences, especially in and around terrain traps (cliffs, trees, gulleys). Even though we have had moderate amounts of new snow, wind can accumulate new snow 3-5x deeper.
