 Spring conditions will rapidly warm the snowpack today, watch out for wet, unstable snow on southerly aspects. Recently formed wind slabs could be a concern in and above treeline terrain. Keep your terrain choices open to avoid these areas of concern, and be ready to adapt to changing conditions as the day heats up.

    The snow began to transition on Saturday and was heavy and wet on solar aspects by early afternoon. Warm spring-like conditions and strong solar radiation on southern slopes will create wet loose unstable snow. The storm snow that fell this week rests on a firm melt-freeze crust, as the sun heats up the surface snow, this recent snow will start to change, and wet, loose avalanches will become possible. 

    Pay attention to your timing on solar aspects today. Pinwheels and roller balls are signs that the snow surface is becoming unstable. Consider changing aspects and slope angles to adjust to this problem today.

    Wind effected and wind slab snow was seen all over the landscape at higher elevations in the BWRA on Saturday. Hand pits and track tests did not get propagating results in the snow we encountered. Slab snow was present however hand hardness was still in the four-finger range.

    Pay close attention to terrain in and above the treeline near ridges, in gullies or convexities, or on slopes where wind-driven snow has accumulated. Exposed ridgelines may have new cornice formations.   Wind-driven snow could be textured on the surface and firm to the touch. Cracking in this new snow is a sign of instability. Choose your terrain carefully this weekend, especially in complex terrain in the Alpine. Be vigilant in checking for changing conditions, especially in steep gullies or couloirs.

Avalanche Discussion

Solar aspects got hot on Saturday, snow was heavy and wet by early afternoon. 

The snow came in cold earlier this week with a low-density water content. Frequent machine track tests did not produce propagating results in our snowpack tests in the BWRA.  Wind slabs were not propagating around Sonora Pass, more like wind-pressed snow and less like an energized slab on Saturday. 

Boot penetration was 30 to 60 cm on average with deeper results in more sheltered locations.
