Eastside Region

LOW avalanche danger persists at all elevations.  Variable and challenging surface conditions remain our greatest hazard.  Identify features of concern, be prepared for hard and slick surfaces, and be on the lookout for isolated areas of unstable snow.

It feels a bit like Groundhog Day here on the eastside. Our dry and mild weather continues, and a major pattern change isn’t expected for at least another week. While we are all hoping for more snow soon, long periods of high pressure like this also bring opportunity. Low avalanche danger, mild weather, and increasing daylight are allowing us to explore deeper in the range and into the high alpine. Keep our current variable and challenging surface conditions in mind if you decide to venture out. Hard and slick surfaces are commonplace throughout the forecast area and pose the biggest hazard to the backcountry enthusiast. Even an otherwise innocuous fall could easily lead to a “slide for life” situation. Be aware of your exposure to terrain hazards such as long steep slopes, cliff bands, tight rocky chokes, and exposed rocks and trees. Slow it down and remain vigilant if you find yourself in steep or consequential terrain. Equipment like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be critical even at lower elevations or in protected areas you may not typically expect to need them.

Moderate winds will likely limit the potential for excessive surface warming today despite the sunny skies. Nevertheless, it is important to continue to monitor for isolated instabilities. Steep SE-S-SW aspects with direct sun will be places where this is more likely. Particularly at lower elevations, areas near rock out cropping’s or cliff bands, and southerly facing couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified.  Seeking out sun-softened snow may provide a more pleasant and potentially safer sliding experience today. However, it's worth noting that the snowpack is still quite transitional. Don't be surprised to find punchy "trapdoor" like snow in these areas where transitional surface snow is resting on cold wintery snow below.
