Expect highly variable snow surface conditions, but the snow may soften in the sun. Small wet avalanches may become possible on slopes facing the sun with daytime warming. Limit your exposure to potential hazards like cornices and glide avalanches.

    Small avalanches may become possible on very steep slopes that face the sun by mid-day. If you begin punching into wet snow deeper than your ankle, it's time to move off from steep slopes. Avalanches are unlikely on shaded aspects, and if you find a thick crust topping snow surfaces. Time your travels to get soft snow (but not too soft) if that's what you're looking for.

    There have been sporadic glide and cornice activity throughout the region these past few days. Stay out from under areas that may have glide cracks and cornices.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect to find uneven surfaces and rain runnels in many areas. Although warm temperatures are in store overnight and into Monday, raditional cooling and long January nights should re-freeze surfaces well. The snowpack has taken a toll from the past couple of major storm events, and has transitioned into a spring-like snowpack. It's only January however, and observers have noted surface hoar on a crust on shaded aspects the past few days. Each day the snow surface melts in the sun and at lower elevations, then refreezes at night. Avalanches may become possible where the surface crust melts during the day, but these should remain small in most areas. If you get out, take note what you find for snow surfaces at various aspects and elevations, and submit an observation here.

The pass was closed from late on January 5th through the 12th after a major winter storm (5th-8th) and a high elevation rain event followed. This 'atmospheric river' initiated a cycle of wet avalanches, and evidence of large to very large avalanches abound in the mountains.
