Avalanche Activity

The avalanche prone locations are covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise. From early morning the natural activity of medium dry avalanches will increase, especially at intermediate and high altitudes.

The sometimes new snow-covered wind slabs of the last few days remain for the foreseeable future prone to triggering at intermediate and high altitudes, caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas on steep slopes. In high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and exist in all aspects. They are covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise. Avalanches can be released in near-surface layers, even by a single winter sport participant. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation medium-sized natural dry avalanches are to be expected. The avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found in particular on very steep slopes at intermediate and high altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

5 to 20 cm of snow, but less in some localities, will fall until the early morning above approximately 1900 m. The soft wind slabs of the last two days are covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In some cases the various wind slabs have bonded still only poorly with the old snowpack, in particular at high altitude. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2400 m.

Tendency

Remotely triggered and natural avalanches are possible.
