Across the area we have a combination of weak sugary snow (facets), resting on firm rain crust. The slab resting on top of this weak layer is about 20" thick or more. Test results show this layer to be consistently failing and propagating with moderate force in the Purcells last week. In the Cabinets, this weak layer has gained strength. Yesterday's stability tests in the East Cabinets varied from propagation with hard force to not propagating at all, depending on location. This weak layer has a lot of potential and if triggered it will likely propagate widely across a slope resulting in high volumes of debris and a deep burial. In the Purcell Range, the early March rain crust is thinner and avalanches could step down below the rain crust, to an even deeper weak layer above 6,000' in elevation. I would continue to treat steep and open terrain with suspicion today, take the time to dig down about 3 feet and see if this weak layer is reactive at your location before committing to consequential terrain.
