Kernpunkte

The avalanche danger rating for the Skyline is MODERATE today.

The biggest concern is the chance of triggering a wind drift or wind slab that formed during the windy storm on Wednesday.

The most likely places to trigger something today are on very steep upper elevation slopes near the ridges on the east side of the compass.

    It appears to me that even though the wind on Wednesday transported lots of snow, the drifts and slabs that formed were not all that sensitive. In general, fresh drifts and slabs stabilize fairly rapidly and we've had two days now since the wind. That said, I'll still be on the lookout for areas where a person could trigger a wind drift or wind slab today. I'll be avoiding the steepest, more obvious wind loaded slopes still today.

Recent Activity

During my travels on Thursday, surprisingly, I did not see any natural avalanche activity from the windy storm on Wednesday. I was almost sure that I would see at least a slab or two that released naturally. Nothing. Not even any significant cornice falls.

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: A few more inches of snow trickled in over the last 24 hours. Temperatures have warmed slightly after yesterday's frigid weather. Most locations are around 10˚F or a bit warmer. The wind has been light from the southwest over the last 24 hours. Riding conditions are pretty good but the new snow is very low density powder and you'll feel any old hard surfaces underneath it. In areas that were still soft before the storm, the snow feels VERY deep.

Mountain Weather: We should see some partial clearing today. High temperatures should get to around 20˚F or a bit warmer. Southwest wind might pick up in speed for a short period of time this morning but overall should stay light to moderate in speed. Saturday looks partly cloudy with warmer temperatures. More storms are expected Sunday and into next week.
