Kernpunkte

While the snowpack tends to settle out quickly around these parts, especially with our recent warm temperatures, you should still be in the assessment phase before stepping out into steeper terrain. Red flags of avalanche danger have been present and even though precipitation is ending, northwest wind will continue to move snow around. Be particularly careful near and above treeline, where wind stiffened slabs could be sensitive to trigger.

West/southwest wind has been predominant, but will switch to north/northwest today. Wind speeds are estimated 20-30 mi/hr over higher terrain. Avalanche danger will favor near and above treeline terrain where potentially sensitive drifts have formed, with poor snowpack structure observed in some areas. Odds of triggering an avalanche are greatest in windier areas with stiff snow near the surface. Avalanches may also be possible in steep (35 degrees +), wind-sheltered terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

It's the first day after a solid set of storms that brought feet of snow, poor visibility and moderate to strong westerly winds to the area. Yesterday's high snow levels and warming have nixed avalanche concerns below treeline. Near and above treeline, triggering a slab avalanche in the recent storm snow is possible. Ease into terrain and evaluate slopes for wind loading. Remember, even though snow is not falling from the sky, wind can move snow efficiently onto leeward slopes. If you see any signs of unstable snow like we did yesterday, seek out lower angle slope options, less than 30 degrees...oh yeah, and see you next year! Happy New Year gang.
