Kernpunkte

Skiers and riders could trigger slab avalanches on buried weak layers that persist under recent snowfall or possibly deeper in the snowpack. These slabs have the potential to be large at the mid and upper elevations. At the lower elevations smaller pockets of slab could be triggered on isolated terrain features. These weaknesses can be found by evaluating the snowpack, however, determining which steep slopes could fail due to the weight of a person may be difficult and snow pit results could be misleading due to spatial variability. Not overthinking the snowpack and exercising continued diligence in making conservative terrain choices is the best way to manage the current avalanche hazard.

    Above 7,500 feet slab avalanches involving persistent weak layers could be triggered with depths to four feet. These slabs could be triggered by the first person who approaches an unstable slope or after a suspect slope has been crossed by multiple persons. These slabs could be up to 18 inches deep below an elevation of 7,500 feet in areas where the lower portion of the snowpack is weak and faceted. At all elevations, slabs may become slightly more sensitive to human triggers during the warmest portion of the day.

Avalanche Discussion

The weather will remain mainly dry through Friday. Temperature inversions will weaken. Afternoon highs will rise into the upper 20s and low 30s. Winds will be light at 15 miles per hour and back from the west to the southwest.Backcountry users can still trigger large slab avalanches on persistent weak layers of faceted snow. These slabs could be up to four feet deep at the mid and upper elevations where the general avalanche hazard is forecast to be moderate. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 7,500 feet where the general avalanche hazard is forecast to be low.
