Avalanche Activity

TO for 24.02. Unstable windslab becoming more widespread on N through E to S aspects. Fragile cornices. Avalanche Haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will gain depth and become more widespread on North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres affecting steep wind sheltered terrain such as coire rims and ridge flanks. Cornices will become fragile on the same aspects. Below 850 metres windslab instabilities will build on the same aspects also affecting steeper wind sheltered terrain. Cross loading will affect North and South aspects. Wind exposed aspects will be stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: There will be heavy snow showers throughout the period. Winds will be gale force South-West at first and gradually decreasing slightly in strength to become strong West South-West. The freezing level will be 300 metres overnight then rising to around 400 metres. Observed Weather Influences: There have been strong to gale force West-South-West winds. There were some moderate showers with snow at higher levels, the freezing level was around 500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: There is little snow below 500 metres. Above this level there is improving cover where the snowpack is generally firming up and stable. Some localised areas of unstable windslab are beginning to developing on wind sheltered locations. These shallow accumulations are mainly present on steep terrain on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
