The current avalanche situation calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger. As a consequence of new snow and wind the wind slabs have increased in size additionally. In all aspects and on wind-loaded slopes medium-sized avalanches are possible. This applies even in case of a small load. Places where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are especially unfavourable. In particular here the avalanches can be triggered in deep layers of the snowpack and can reach as far as the valley bottom. This applies in particular in case of releases originating from very steep shady starting zones above the tree line. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.
In the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 4 (high) 20 to 40 cm of snow has fallen since Thursday above approximately 1800 m. Up to 20 cm of snow will fall until Saturday above approximately 1800 m. The strong wind will transport the new snow significantly. The fresh wind slabs are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack especially on very steep shady slopes.
The avalanche activity will slowly decrease.
