Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

A lot of snow fell in the south until Sunday. This was widely deposited on an irregular and therefore favourable old snow surface. However, the old snow surface was also angular in places and therefore less favourable, especially on north-facing slopes at a distance from ridgelines and sheltered from the wind.

In the north, wind slabs formed on Friday and Saturday as a result of the strong southerly winds, and on Sunday due to the westerly winds. These are mostly only thin, but they proved prone to triggering at the weekend.

Gliding avalanches are still possible. This applies particularly to east-, south- and west-facing slopes below approximately 2600 m and more rarely to north-facing slopes below approximately 2200 m. These avalanches may be large in some cases in regions with a lot of snow.

Trend until Thursday, 15.02.2024

On Wednesday, it will be partly sunny in the north after a mostly overcast night. In the south and inneralpine regions, it will be mostly sunny. On Thursday, it will be sunny at times and very mild. The zero-degree level will rise to over 3000 m on Thursday.

The danger of dry avalanches will fall rapidly in the south and gradually in other regions. Gliding avalanches are still possible, occasionally even large ones in regions with a lot of snow. Wet snow avalanches are also possible, especially in the south in the event of solar radiation.
