Avalanche Activity

Increase in danger of dry avalanches as a consequence of new snow and strong wind. Gradual increase in danger of moist avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong to storm force northwesterly wind, further wind slabs will form in the course of the day. These will form in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally at elevated altitudes. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation the avalanche danger is one level higher. Fresh and older wind slabs are to be assessed with care and prudence. This applies especially on very steep slopes adjacent to ridgelines. Dry avalanches can in isolated cases be released in deep layers.

Snowpack Structure

In particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed. At transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example the danger of dry avalanches is higher. The weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular at low and intermediate altitudes. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist deep in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack can still be released in isolated cases in particular at intermediate and high altitudes.
