Kernpunkte

Watch for new and reactive wind slabs forming over the day.
A persistent weak layer remains a concern, particularly in steep, sheltered areas at treeline.

Lawinenprobleme

Light snow and wind may continue to build small wind slabs near ridgetops and on lee and crossloaded features at upper elevations. Wind slabs could step down to deeper weak layers.

  • Persistent Slabs

    • Hochgebirge
    • Waldgrenze
    • Unterhalb der Waldgrenze
    Wahrscheinlichkeit
    Possible
    Größe
    1–2.5

Surface hoar or facets over a crust is buried 30 to 60 cm. This layer has been most reactive around steep openings in the forest or high elevation cutblocks.

This problem is most prevalent in the west of this region.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are confident that there are persistent slabs in the snowpack, but uncertain about how likely they are to trigger.
  • We are uncertain due to the variability of wind effect on the snowpack.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches were reported in the area.

Looking forward, natural avalanches are unlikely, but riders triggering slabs remains possible especially where there is no supportive crust.

Snowpack Summary

A few centimeters of new snow and strong winds may build small wind slabs at upper elevations. A supportive surface crust can be found on solar-facing slopes, and most areas at treeline and below.

A persistent weak layer of surface hoar or facets and a crust is buried 30 to 60 cm deep. Persistent slab avalanches are most likely in sheltered areas at treeline and below, where the surface hoar was well preserved.

The mid and lower snowpack are well settled in some areas. In others, large facets or depth hoar are present at the bottom of the snowpack.

Mix of sun and clouds. 2 to 10 cm of snow. 40 km/h west ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -7 °C.

Tuesday
Mix of sun and clouds. 1 to 4 cm of snow. 30 km/h west ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -11 °C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for signs of instability like whumpfing, hollow sounds, shooting cracks, or recent avalanches.
  • Recent strong wind means wind slabs may be found farther downslope than expected.
  • Approach steep and open slopes at and below treeline cautiously, as buried surface hoar may exist.
