Strong winds will pick the snow up, bounce it around, and form it into cohesive drifts and slabs. Wind may be strong enough to move snow around in open areas well below treeline. Look for deeper, fresh drifts of snow as you move about in the backcountry. Check to see if they are producing long shooting cracks or fractures. Early in the day slabs may be smaller and more isolated in nature, but as the day progresses expect them to become larger and quite sensitive. Slabs may fracture in surprising ways as they form over faceted snow surfaces. Visibility may be poor, so best to avoid any open slopes that are steep enough to avalanche if you find signs of instability.
