Steep wind-loaded slopes at higher elevations remain the most concerning and likely places to trigger a slide large enough to bury you. Look for wind-hardened snow below ridges and cornices as prime places to find this problem. Weak, cohesionless snow has become problematic on steep, shady slopes in wind-sheltered areas. Many backcountry travelers have recently triggered loose avalanches that entrained more snow than expected and have narrowly escaped being swept down the mountain. Use extra caution or simply avoid these consequential areas to reduce your risk of an accident.
