Salt River and Wyoming Ranges

The avalanche hazard will be LOW during the morning hours and all day in areas that were bare ground yesterday. The hazard will increase to MODERATE on steep slopes with slick old snow surfaces as significant new snowfall accumulations occur. Loose snow sluffs and small soft slab avalanches could release naturally or be triggered by humans on these old snow surfaces. Small avalanches on steep confined slopes and or in cliff areas can seriously hurt or kill humans.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Snowfall will begin and increase in coverage this evening and become widespread across the northwest mountains of Wyoming and spread into the Salt River and Wyoming Ranges Thursday morning. The most significant snow will likely occur on Thursday; however periods of moderate snowfall are possible overnight, especially in Yellowstone National Park and possibly as far south as the Teton Range. By Thursday night accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are expected in the northwest mountains. The valleys will see some light rain or a rain and snow mixture that will change to snow by morning. Gusty south to southwest winds will veer towards the west as a cold front moves through. Mountain temperatures will drop into the upper single digits and teens Thursday night.The general avalanche hazard is expected to increase to MODERATE on steep slopes underlain by slick old snow surfaces. Small loose snow sluffs and shallow soft slabs may release naturally or be triggered by humans on skis, snowboards or on foot on steep slopes with significant deposits of new snow. Small slides on steep confined slopes, in couloirs and cliff areas can seriously hurt or kill humans. Caution is advised. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW in areas not underlain by slick old snow surfaces.
