Avalanche Activity

Limited (2), Thursday. Remarkable (3), on Friday, in the far south of Aran.

With the expected snowfall and wind, the danger of avalanches will increase due to the formation of new sheets of vented snow. These new snow accumulations will be unstable in little-frequented shade areas, above 2,400 m. These plates may be triggered by the passage of a person, but mostly maintain small dimensions except in the extreme south of the Aran, where the snowfall will accumulate more thickness, locally reaching size 2 (medium), with the capacity to cover a person. Dangerous places are near hills and ridges and also at the entrance of channels. On the steep grassy slopes, some small and, locally, medium-sized basal slide avalanches are possible. They will fall, above all, in sunny areas, at all levels, and also on shady slopes below 2000 m. In addition, in all orientations, some small purges of recent wet snow are possible, without the capacity to bury a person.

Snowpack Structure

Snow is generally found above 1,400-1,500 m in northern orientations and 1,600-1,700 m in south. At high altitudes, the thicknesses can generally range between 45-55 cm in sectors protected from the wind, locally more.

Tendency

The probability of plate avalanches and basal landslides will continue. Danger without changes or, in slight decrease, as far as landslides are concerned.
