Avalanche Activity

SC 18/02 Unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 900m. Thaw conditions. Av. Haz. Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Overnight drifting of recent deposits will form windslab in wind sheltered locations on North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Where accumulations acquire depth over snow-ice they will be unstable. Areas most affected will be gully tops, convex slopes and around steep corrie rims. Later in the period deposits will start to consolidate in the milder conditions. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very light snowfall above 700 metres during the evening, followed by a dry night. Light rain at all levels during the day as the freezing level rises well over the summits. Light variable winds during the evening will increase in strength to become strong West-South-Westerlies during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight snowfall to glen level on mostly light variable winds. Dry with inversion conditions this morning and cloud pushing in during the afternoon. Light to moderate Easterly winds at summit level. Freezing level around 700 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Snowfall on mostly light winds has formed a general covering of fresh snow on most aspects. Localised, deeper accumulations are present on South-West through North-West to North aspects above 900 metres. Distribution is limited but deposits are only moderately bonded or moderate to poorly bonded on the steepest terrain, especially where an old snow-ice base is present. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
