Avalanche Activity

CM for 10/3/22 Wet snow instabilities, with windslab deposits mainly above 850m on N through E to SE aspects. Considerable Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will initially be deposited in wind sheltered areas. Greatest accumulations will be on North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres. Some wet snow instabilities will then develop in these areas with the onset of rain to all levels. Any recent cornice build up will be liable to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Cooler conditions overnight with the Freezing Level lowering to around 500 metres, accompanied by further snow showers. The Freezing Level will then rise once again to above summits with further precipitation, bringing rain and drizzle to all, levels from first light. A strong South- Easterly, then Southerly air flow will affect the area. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight snow showers affected high ground above 850 metres. Thereafter it was a mild, mostly dry and overcast day. Cooler conditions slowly began to affect the area only towards the end of the day. The winds have been strong mostly South-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of unstable windslab exist above 900 meters. The areas affected are steep corrie rims, headwalls, gully exits, and high wind sheltered locations on North-East to South-East aspects. Below 700 metres the moist snowpack is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
